The BMA GP Committee, which rejected a version of the contract last month, said it plans to enter “serious discussions with our membership and the wider profession on what action we take next”. Dr Luke Allen, a GP based in Oxford, said: “The aims of the contract are spot-on: we need to increase capacity and improve access. However it’s perverse to expect our anaemic system to provide additional services without additional resources.”if there is no other way of protecting patients from harm – that is our first concern. We desperately need support to provide timely, high-quality care to the growing number of people who seek our services every day.
It comes as a new Royal College of GPs report into suggests that one in four staff fear their practice is in danger of closing because of unmanageable workloads and rising demand. While GPs have traditionally been reluctant to withdraw their labour due to their status as independent contractors, such action is being considered as doctors worry about how their practices will survive and more leave the profession.
