Lawyer Timothy Sterkel replaces former Judge Gayle Williams Byers, who resigned in July.
Sterkel must win the election in November 2023 for a new six-year term that would begin on Jan. 1, 2024.
Sterkel has been a lawyer for 26 years, including six years as an assistant city prosecutor for South Euclid. He has served as an acting judge for the municipal court and also spent 12 years as a volunteer for a Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court diversion program. Byers stepped down from the bench after a decade in which she was at frequent public loggerheads with the city’s administration over her handling of the court’s business. Retired judge Harry Fields has been serving as judge since Byers left.
Mayor Georgine Welo and City Council began questioning Byers’ use of public dollars to travel to conferences in 2014. The city also accused her of failing to properly reconcile her 2019 budget and putting the city’s bond-rating at risk. Byers accused the city administration of targeting her because of her race, because she cut back on the court’s use of fines as punishment and because she asked for an increase in the city’s budget to fund the court’s operations. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
