“It came very close last night to having a horrible, horrible tragedy. And we’re fortunate that didn’t happen.”
Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump is helped off the stage by U.S. Secret Service agents at a campaign event in Butler, Pa., on Saturday, July 13, 2024. COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov.
Lt. Gov. Jon Husted said based on his conversations with other delegates, he expects the convention will have a more sober tone than it would have otherwise, at least initially. But he expects the event will be very safe, or he wouldn’t bring his daughter, who is traveling with him. The gist of the message, Edwards said, is that there will be a heavy security environment and that the week will continue as planned.
Another delegate, David Arredondo, said he would be more worried if he were staying in Milwaukee, instead of an hour away. DeWine said he watched President Joe Biden’s televised speech on Saturday night. He called the president’s address “appropriate.” Asked about a social media post on Saturday from Republican Sen. JD Vance that accused Biden of inspiring the assassination attempt through his anti-Trump rhetoric, DeWine paused before responding.who’s responsible is the shooter,” DeWine said. “And until we get some better indication of what’s going through his mind, you don’t know what his motivations were.
All delegates interviewed for this story said they feel comfortable attending the convention, since the Republican delegation is staying an hour from the main arena site, and since convention security is overwhelming, like what Cleveland saw when it hosted the Republican National Convention in 2016.
