EDITORIAL: 'DeWine now has a chance to show his principles & judgment again, to keep the legislature from a rash mistake that could make Ohioans less safe by removing all licensing & training requirements from the state’s 18-year-old concealed-carry law.'

that a person stopped by law enforcement officers must “promptly” inform them that she or he is carrying a concealed handgun.

That is, SB 215 undercuts a protective promise that concealed-carry supporters made to police at the time the original law was enacted. As foes of concealed-carry predicted at the time, and as SB 215 demonstrates, the legislature, time after time, has whittled away at the original concealed-carry law.

But creating a legal landscape where virtually every Ohioan age 21 and over who is not under a felony disability that bars them from owning a weapon can carry a concealed handgun without a permit or required training -- and without an affirmative duty to tell a police officer they’re carrying -- can only compound those gun-death numbers in Ohio.
