The House Minority Leader delayed an expected quick passage of the bill on Thursday night by speaking on the House floor for more than eight hours.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Thursday delayed the passage of the Democrats’ $1.8 trillion social and climate spending plan with a record-breaking filibuster-style speech that went on for more than eight hours, prompting criticism from Democrats who now plan to pass the bill on Friday.CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty ImagesIn his speech, McCarthy attacked the spending bill as “the single most reckless and irresponsible spending in the history of this country.

The House Minority leader began his speech at 8.38 pm local time and continued to speak for more than eight hours. At 4:46 a.m. local time, McCarthy broke the record for the longest house speech set by Nancy Pelosi in 2018. In his lengthy speech McCarthy spoke about everything from Nancy Pelosi’s running of the house, his childhood in California, the threat from China, the Lincoln presidency, inflation in the U.S., immigration among other things.
