Washington Fred Malek, the former president of the Marriott hotel chain and one of the Republican Party's most influential fundraisers, has died, his office confirmed Monday.
Malek died Sunday at age 82. A cause of death was not immediately available. Malek underwent treatment for bladder cancer about five years ago. Malek was one of the most enduring figures in Republican politics and his prodigious fundraising on behalf of GOP candidates put him at the center of presidential politics for more than four decades. He worked for Richard Nixon's administration, ran the 1988 Republican National Convention in the run-up to George H.W.
