The summons is only enforceable for individuals who are in Canada, though the committee could seek to enforce it if a person enters the country at a later date. The meeting is response to Google’s blocking of news stories from showing up in some people’s search results and in its “discover” feature on Android devices. Google said it was running tests that affect fewer than four per cent of Canadian users, in response to the Liberal government’s Bill C-18.Article content

That legislation, the Online News Act, would require Google and Facebook parent company Meta to share revenues with news publishers. Postmedia, publisher of the National Post, is in favour of the legislation. Google previously urged the Liberal government to amend the bill. It took issue with language that Google said requires payments to publishers for linking to their content, which it argued contradicts the foundations of how the internet works and sets a bad precedent.Bill C-18 is currently in front of the Senate, where it will go to the transport and communications committee for study, likely in the coming weeks.
