Kevin Whitmer, who is leaving NJ Advance Media at the end of the year, impacted journalism in this state like few others.

, including 13 occupying what is easily the most important and demanding job in New Jersey journalism, Kevin wants to recharge his batteries and explore new challenges.

I can still see Kevin inside the old Star-Ledger headquarters on 9-11, using a red pen to mark up pages emblazoned with the headline “TERROR BEYOND BELIEF.” As he helped the staff get through those brutal few months, he never forgot that the journalists delivering him stories from the frontlines were as deeply impacted by what happened as everyone else., lived in Manhattan and was ready to ride his bike to Ground Zero to help with the coverage.

Trust. It goes both ways. When Amy Ellis Nutt wanted to investigate the sinking of a scallop boat off the Jersey Shore, Kevin gave her and videographer Andre Malok all the time and resources they needed.“Kevin never seemed to doubt we’d bring home the story,” said Amy, who now freelances and writes books. “There’s not much more a reporter could ask from an editor.”
