The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the cause of a fire that sank a 48-foot yacht in the Hudson River on Saturday afternoon.
A good Samaritan boater rescued all seven occupants from the craft, which caught fire in the waters between West New York and 72nd Street in Manhattan, New York at about 3:30 p.m., Coast Guard Petty Officer Ryan Shultz said. The The passengers were later put on an NYPD boat and brought to Chelsea Piers, Shultz said. No injuries were reported.
Several emergency service departments responded to the fire, including the Hoboken Fire Department, New York and North Hudson Regional Fire Department, the NYPD and FDNY, and the Coast Guard Station New York. Shultz said the boat sank completely and the Coast Guard is keeping track of its location, and it had drifted to the area of 116th St. around 11 a.m. Sunday, Shultz said. The location is marked with yellow and orange markers so other boats will avoid it, he said, and it will be up to the owner and the insurer to get a commercial salvage company to remove it.Our journalism needs your support.
