Oppy quickly becomes one of the best movie protagonists of the year, as Good Night Oppy makes the Mars Rover into a cute and humanized hero. aurora_amidon's review:

What if I told you that one of the most absorbing protagonists of the year is a motorized vehicle? 2022 has been an exceptional year for the complex and captivating film protagonist: We got to revisit Tom Cruise’s beloved Navy aviator; Michelle Yeoh stole our hearts as an ass-kicking laundromat owner; anyone who claims thatdidn’t make them cry is clearly lying. But I’m not talking about them.

Seamlessly edited together by Rejh Cabrera and Helen Kearns, the assortment of footage weaves an engrossing story. Even if one were to remove the artistry and emotional resonance from, Oppy’s story is more than enough to keep our eyes glued to the screen.

Which brings us to Oppy, the glue that holds the doc together. Cartoonishly boxy with two big buggish eyes, she looks like WALL-E and has an irresistibly optimistic, witty personality that shines through whenever she sends messages back to earth. As she chugs contentedly along Mars’s rocky terrain toward a giant crater to gather data for her creators, it’s hard not to think of her as a cuddly little child, just like Steve does.

A feeling of affection toward little Oppy is greatly aided by ILM’s stunningly lifelike CGI, which makes us feel like we’re right there on Mars next to her—and that neither the planet nor the machine are all that far from the human experience. Mars’s soil is red, rich and full of life, and the mountainous skyline that stretches ahead promises adventure. The visual engineers don’t just do an exemplary job fabricating Mars, but of creating Oppy.

This provocative, breathtaking and highly detailed landscape only makes it that much more nerve-wracking when Oppy encounters danger. Sandstorms look like they’re straight out of Denis Villeneuve’s, and when our robot’s wheels get stuck in the ground, we can almost feel the turning of the cranks against Mars’ erratic turf.
