GOLDSTEIN: Use notwithstanding clause to overturn Supreme Court decision reducing sentences for multiple murderers Via sunlorrie

It was also cruel and unusual punishment for the families of these murder victims..Across the country right now, Canadians are watching a slow-moving horror show in which sentences imposed by our courts on about two-dozen of society’s worst killers are being dramatically reduced because of this ruling.

“Sure, they’ve been assured these thrill killers will never see the light of day, but there are no guarantees. Memories fade; narcissistic manipulators like Millard can be remarkably clever at getting what they want.” This is all happening because the Supreme Court retroactively declared a 2011 law passed by the Harper government permitting consecutive versus concurrent sentences for first-degree murder in cases of multiple homicides unconstitutional on the basis of the Alexandre Bissonnette case.

Bissonnette, who was 27 when he committed this mass murder and has been incarcerated since, will be 52 when he is able to launch his first bid for parole, as opposed to 67 under the judge’s ruling that was struck down by the Supreme Court.
