The good news for Canadians paying Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax is that the feds will send out their latest quarterly climate action incentive payment this week. The bad news is that according to the independent, non-partisan parliamentary budget officer, most Canadians paying the federal carbon tax receive less in rebates than they pay in carbon taxes.
In total, the carbon tax applies to 22 fossil fuels — including necessities such as natural gas and oil for home heating — which is why it raises the cost of almost everything, in addition to the cost of new clean fuel and clean electricity regulations that don’t include rebates. Given Canada’s affordability crisis, 67% say it’s a poor time to increase carbon taxes, 18% a good time, 12% an average time, with 3% unsure.
McDonald wants his government to delay the implementation of the carbon tax on home heating oil in Atlantic Canada as well as the implementation of the clean fuel standard regulations, which are separate from the carbon tax.
