Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions went up by 19 million tonnes, or by 2.8%, in 2021 according to the Canadian Climate Institute

That means Trudeau’s target of lowering Canada’s emissions to 40% below 2005 levels by 2030, and to net zero by 2050, is a long, long way off.Advertisement 3We apologize, but this video has failed to load.To hit Trudeau’s 2030 target, Canada’s emissions will have to drop by 251 million tonnes annually, to 440 million tonnes, in nine years.

Now, as the global economy continues to recover from the pandemic, global emissions are rising again, up to 691 million tonnes in 2021 according to the CCI data. No federal government, Liberal or Conservative, has ever hit a single emission target it has set in 35 years, including the 2020 target set by the Trudeau government of reducing emissions to 17% below 2005 levels.
