Since the day he bought his first horse in 1968 at the age of 21, Ian Smith has had a passion for harness racing. Eventually, he became a beloved fixture of the horse racing scene on P.E.I. alongside his older brother, Don.
“Then we got a call from an old classmate, Henry Smallwood, who had a chance to buy a nice two-year-old colt called Maple Leaf Robbie,” says Ian, detailing their next move after Rosa’s success in 1978.Ian’s investment in the sport paid off in a big way in 1980, a few years after their acquisition of an Australian-bred horse named Saul’s Pride in the late ‘70s.
Team Smith achieved glory with their prized standardbred Pownal Bay Matt on what turned out to be an extra special day for a first-time Gold Cup winner, the late Earl Smith, a great veteran trainer and driver.
