GM invests $300 million in Michigan amid flak from Trump over the Ohio plant closure
U.S. President Donald Trump speaks at the Joint Systems Manufacturer on March 20 in Lima, Ohio. today announced a $300 million investment at its Orion Assembly Plant in Michigan to make a new electric vehicle.Bolt EV. The new vehicle will add some 400 workers to the plant.
According to one official at GM who spoke on background, the investment was already planned before Trump’s most recent outbursts aimed at GM on Twitter and from the stump, but the company made the announcement this week in an attempt to counter the publicity it was getting for cutting jobs and from the Trump twitter-palooza.
Trump this week visited an Army tank factory for a photo opportunity and spent part of his speech slamming GM and the United Automobile Workers union for closing Lordstown. GM officials have privately said that there is virtually no chance of putting new products at Lordstown.
