The once popular mode of transport vanished after less than 20 years of operation.
When we think of the history of Glasgow public transport in the 20th century, we tend to focus on the city's lost tram network, corporation buses and modernisation of the subway.
However, Glasgow, a city dominated by a sprawling tram network, was not quick to take to the trolleybus. Proposals were put forth in the 1930s, but nothing would come to fruition until after the Second World War when a trolleybus experiment was carried out between Polmadie and Provanmill. Its electric motors provided it with ample traction for climbing steep hills, and it was also more environmentally-friendly than the diesel and petrol powered motor buses. Routes did require the erection of catenary wires, but this was still more cost-effective and practical than installing the rails needed to run the trams.
