Long time Tribune photographer Anthony Val Mazzenga died of heart failure on Dec. 2 at his Hoffman Estates home. He was 91 years old.
Anthony Val Mazzenga walked from his family home on the West Side into the Tribune Tower in 1946 as a fresh-faced, personable and ambitious 15-year-old and over the next five decades crafted a career as an esteemed photographer.
It was Val and that would be the name attached to tens of thousands of photos that embellished the pages of the newspaper. Among Mazzenga’s many international assignments were Afghan resistance fighters in Pakistan, the slaughter of seals in Newfoundland, famine in Africa, the 20th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, and refugee camps in Southeast Asia.In 1978, he spent three months with a pair of reporters traveling across South America for a series of Tribune articles and photos later collected in a book.
Mazzenga won more than 200 awards for his work, including five of the Tribune’s own Beck Awards. He was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize six times and inducted into the International Press Corps Hall of Fame in June 2008. In the spring of 2005, Mazzenga and his wife were in the garden of their home when he handed her one of his Nikon cameras and said, “Try this.”
