Los Angeles police shot and killed a 14-year-old girl inside a Burlington Coat Factory dressing room during the attempted takedown of an assault suspect, authorities said. The male suspect was also killed in the shooting.

A Los Angeles police officer works behind a broken glass door on Thursday after two people, including a 14-year-old girl, were killed inside a Burlington Coat Factory store in North Hollywood.

Authorities did not immediately say if the suspect had a gun. Police found a heavy metal cable lock near the suspect that they say may have been used in that assault. They said the woman who was injured was the victim of the suspect's assault, and she had injuries to her head, face and arms.Editor-in-chief Nicole Carroll takes you behind the scenes of the newsroom in this weekly newsletter
