Asked for an assessment of this latest dud, defenceman Rasmus Andersson could have been describing the entire season: “Mediocre, honestly.”
As the Flames embarked Sunday on a two-game road trip, a gruelling back-to-back through Dallas and Minnesota, they were sitting six points out of the final wildcard position in the Western Conference. There was potential for that gap to be stretched to eight before they tucked into their hotel beds in the Big D. It’s hard to imagine a furious push from a team that hasn’t won back-to-back games in almost a month and a half and hasn’t strung together three in a row since early December.
Asked for an assessment of this latest dud, workhorse defenceman Rasmus Andersson could have been describing the entire season: “Mediocre, honestly.”The Flames’ season-long goal differential is now minus-2, putting them in the red for the first time. They’re the only squad that has yet to pull off a third-period comeback. And once they do … or if they do … they’ll be the only squad that has managed just one.
Their star goaltender, Jacob Markstrom, has finally looked like his old self in the past couple of games, but it’s been a case of too-leaky-until-too-late. His save percentage, an ugly .890, ranks among the worst on the circuit.
