Huberdeau’s max-term contract extension — an eight-year, US$84-million doozy — doesn’t kick in until July, which means that free-agent signing Nazem Kadri was Calgary’s highest-paid player this past winter. The $7-million man didn’t provide enough bang for all those bucks. Kadri averaged 1.23 points per game with the Colorado Avalanche in 2021-22. As he settled in at the Saddledome, that dipped to 0.68.
Andrew Mangiapane, after proving he can be a top triggerman and now being paid like one, sniped just 17. That’s not even half of his total from his bust-out campaign. Since they so often were wishing for a momentum-turning marker or a clutch stop, perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Flames were on the wrong end of 30 one-goal losses in 2022-23. According to Sportsnet, that is tied for the second-highest total in the league history books.
