A missing penalty flag could have turned the Giants’ 99.7 percent win probability into a guaranteed victory instead of an improbable loss to the Jets.

Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey said Thursday that rookie Will McDonald was lined up illegally before the snap on last Sunday’s game-turning play — a 35-yard field-goal attempt that Graham Gano pushed left with 24 seconds remaining in regulation. The issue is not with McDonald jumping over the line of scrimmage in an attempt to block the kick, but with the fact that he was not fully outside of long snapper Casey Kreiter’s shoulders, as replays confirm.

“You can’t cover the center. He was covering the center,” McGaughey said. “If you align within the framework of the center, that’s an illegal formation. Can’t do that. You have to be completely outside the framework of the center.”The Giants say Jets rookie Will McDonald lined up illegally on Graham Gano’s late missed field goal on Sunday. As stated in the NFL rulebook, a defensive player “must have his entire body outside the snapper’s shoulder pads at the snap.

If the Jets were flagged on the field goal, the Giants would’ve converted a fourth-and-1, run out the clock on first down and won, 10-7. Gano, who is battling a knee injury, took responsibility for missing the kick in the postgame locker room. “You’d like to have everything perfect, but obviously it wasn’t,” McGaughey said. “It is what it is. You missed the kick, got to move on and make the next one.”This underdog World Series didn't get enough creditThe Giants say Jets rookie Will McDonald lined up illegally on Graham Gano's late missed field goal on Sunday.
