The Giants' fate lands on the shoulders of their latest addition.
This was a big move - literally, Waller is 6-foot-6, 255 pounds - for Schoen, as he adds a much-needed tight end weapon for quarterback, who ranked fifth in the NFL in Total QBR and completion percentage when targeting a tight end.
Waller, who turns 31 on Sept. 13, has four years left on his contract, with salaries of $11 million, $10.525 million, $11.525 million, and $13.525 million. Waller played nine and 11 games in the past two seasons. He played full seasons in 2019 and 2020 — and had 1,145 and 1,196 yards, with three and nine touchdowns. He made his only Pro Bowl in 2020.
His yards per game dipped in 2021 and 2022 after being 71.6 and 74.8 from 2019-20, but the Giants expect him to rediscover that production after he missed 14 of 34 regular season games the past two years. Waller has no guaranteed money left on his contract past 2023, so Schoen can move on quickly if things don’t work out. He’ll carry an $11.875 million salary cap hit in 2023.
