Texas students raise $250K to help 80-year-old janitor retire

“He shared with me his rent within a year has gone up nearly $400, and he just couldn’t afford to continue paying without going back to work,” Jason Hooper, the principal of the school, told the news outlet.

Thurman told KTEN that when he learned why the custodian started working again, he and his peers felt the need to step up. “When I saw him in the hall, it broke my heart,” Thurman said. “Nobody at that age should be working; they should be living the rest of their life.”
