Lithuanian officials praised a 'historic event' as Germany began deploying soldiers in the Baltic country on Monday, marking the first time since World War II that German forces will be stationed outside the country on a long-term basis. Around two dozen soldiers arrived in Lithuania, laying the groundwork for another 150 to join them later this year. It is expected that by the end of 2027, the total number will reach 5,000. This move is seen as a significant example for other NATO countries on the eastern flank, bordering Russia and its ally Belarus.
