The German copyright collecting society GEMA carried over momentum from the previous year and increased revenues by nearly 5% in 2019.

BERLIN —

"Against the background of current developments, GEMA's very good 2019 financial year will form a 'crisis airbag' for our members," said GEMA CEOin Berlin this week, referring to the COVID-19 pandemic that has buckled most aspects of the global music industry, namely concerts and physical commerce. As in 2018, the increase in total revenues is primarily attributable to the digital segment, where revenues rose by over 72 percent to €181.9 million . New contracts concluded with digital service providers were a particularly positive factor. In contrast, income declined in the areas of duplication and remuneration claims.
