Works painted by German POWs at an interrogation camp will go on public display in Cumberland County.
Four paintings done by German prisoners of war at the Pine Grove Furnace Interrogation Camp during World War II found a new home at the Cumberland County Historical Society, where they will one day be on exhibit.The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources had guardianship of the works which depict the camp and scenes from back home in Europe and transferred them to the Historical Society, so 'they could be seen by tens of thousands of people.
The identity of the painters of these four works is unknown.They are being reunited with other paintings done by German POWs, which the Historical Society previously acquired through a private collector. Several of those need restoration.One artist is known. His name is Heinrich 'Harry' Bachhaus, a German POW who actually worked at the camp and became an artist after the war. Some of the POWs were sailors from a German submarine hit during the war.One visitor was especially interested.
