'Down’s Syndrome doesn’t stop me doing anything, I just need some support and understanding' 📺🕺 On Christmas Day George Webster will make TV history again – by being the first person with Down’s Syndrome to take part in StrictlyComeDancing
, Webster was asked to record a video for BBC Bitesize, in which he talked about the common myths about people with Down’s Syndrome. One of the myths he wants to dispel is the idea that they’re always happy. “That’s not true,” he says, “people with Down’s Syndrome have emotions and feelings like every other person.”
It’s down to his “supportive” teachers and friends in his mainstream primary and secondary schooling, says Webster, as well as his parents, that he’s had a happy time growing up. Though it hasn’t always been easy. “There’s been occasions where I’ve been bullied and called names at school and college,” he says, “one time where one of those ‘slippery’ signs was thrown at the back of my head and I had to go to the doctor’s and that wasn’t a nice feeling at all.
‘People with Down’s Syndrome have emotions and feelings like every other person,’ says George Webster “People have expectations about what I can and can’t do. But I can do things, there are just some things I do find hard, and that’s not a bad thing. Down’s Syndrome doesn’t stop me doing anything, I just need some support and understanding. People sometimes think I can’t get to places by myself, but I can do that, because I’ve had training in the past about how to get to school or college, which really helped me.
What does Webster think might help children born with Down’s Syndrome in the future? “I think that we could have a lot more people like me in the media, on TV and in film. We had[a 2019 Hollywood film starring 34-year-old break-out star Zack Gottsagen, an actor with Down’s Syndrome] and the actor Tommy Jessop in, a spin-off of the comedy drama, about the lives of a couple with Down’s Syndrome. “Representation is getting better,” says Webster, “but there’s a lot more to improve on.
