Stormy space weather makes for a hypnotic display in the heavens.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 's Space Weather Prediction Center says G1 geomagnetic storms are likely from Tuesday, May 9 to May 11 due to possible coronal mass ejection arrival and Coronal Hole High Speed Streams influences. If the weather forecast pans out, there may be three opportunities to view the northern lights in the skies over Metro Vancouver this week.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks calls for "high" auroral activity Tuesday, with displays possible overhead from "Inuvik, Yellowknife, Rankin and Iqaluit to Juneau, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay and Sept-Iles, and visible low on the horizon from Seattle, Des Moines, Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, and Halifax." This means residents across all the province might be able to observe the heavenly green glow.
Metro Vancouver weather forecast and northern lights viewing Locals looking for another opportunity to view the dancing lights may have a couple of more opportunities, provided the Vancouver weather stays on its sunny course. Thursday offers a third opportunity to view the northern lights, with "highly active auroral displays" possible as far south in the aforementioned cities. As such, folks in the Lower Mainland should have another chance to view the colourful manifestation.
