Gregor Chisholm: Genesis of Jays’ off-season “was just to get better,” Mark Shapiro says

DUNEDIN, Fla. — Mark Shapiro made the media rounds this week to provide an update on the ongoing renovations at Rogers Centre and to talk about the business operations of his ball club.

On what comes next for the business side of the club after building a new spring training complex and starting the renovations at Rogers CentreThe magnitude and the complexity of the next phase of the renovation is not to be understated. We’re going to complete this phase on time, no problem.

Shapiro On the expense side, this is the way we envisioned it. Commit, build out infrastructure initially as we transform the team. That’s where we were going to put a lot of capital, a lot of energy and effort. ‘OK, we need to build out all the tools and resources that support a championship environment and we need to accumulate a mass of talent as well, young talent.’

You don’t start to see our team together until about the last 10 games but you get to see some of our younger players. You get to experience and start to reconnect with the game. It’s important for us to be visible and present. So, we feel grateful that we’re going to have all of our home games. and then the feeds picked up on a lot of our road games too.”I was a big believer in the expansion.
