Senators head coach D.J. Smith blows his whistle during practice.Great Big Sea founder making peace with his past | SaltWireAs the calendar turns to September, the Ottawa Senators head coach arrived in town last weekend from his off-season home in Windsor and he’s putting the final touches on training camp plans with general manager Pierre Dorion that will get under way Sept. 20 at the Canadian Tire Centre.

The Senators used a franchise-record seven goalies last season because it was difficult to keep anyone healthy. “Ultimately, it’s about winning,” Smith told Postmedia in an interview Wednesday. “We’ve just got to find ways to win. I’ve get to get Tarasenko at his best, Giroux, Batherson at their best and I’ve got to make sure everybody is important.

The Senators are at the point in their evolution where bigger isn’t necessarily better. That’s why when camp gets started, the Senators will be split into two teams and decisions will be made quickly because there aren’t many jobs up for grabs. Smith and his staff want to get down to business as soon as camp gets started. Each group will face the Toronto Maple Leafs in a home-and-home series that starts Sept. 24 in Ottawa and then further decisions will be made to put the team together.

With the calendar turned to September and fall on the horizon, hockey season is just around the corner.Restricted free agent forwards Shane Pinto and Egor Sokolov are the only two players left to be signed, but the hope is both situations will be settled by the time the players are scheduled to report for medicals.
