NHL preseason games against the Panthers and Penguins are a rare opportunity for him, and he wasn\u0027t going to miss them for anything.
While it’s unusual for a player to want to suit up for back-to-back games at this time of year, the Ottawa Senators winger is excited about the possibility of facing the Florida Panthers in Sydney, N.S., on Sunday night and the Pittsburgh Penguins in Halifax on Monday.Batherson, 25, who grew up in Nova Scotia and makes his off-season home in the Annapolis Valley, spent parts of three seasons with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in Sydney and lives only an hour outside Halifax.
“My whole family all lives an hour outside Halifax, so I want to play in both, and I’m really excited for it. My dad grew up about 15 minutes from the rink in Cape Breton. My billets are going to be there, buddies, close family friends, treatment guys and old trainers. You name it and they’ll be there.”
Batherson spends his off-season in New Minas, N.S., skating with the likes of Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby, Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon and Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand. The first stop will be a Kraft Hockeyville game against the Panthers in the 5,000-seat Centre 200 and the second against the Penguins is at the 10,595-seat Scotiabank Centre in Halifax. Both buildings will be jumping, especially with Crosby suiting up so close to his hometown in Cole Harbour.Winger Egor Sokolov, who survived the first cut Friday night, spent three seasons with Cape Breton.
