The gowns and costumes on display in Party By Design represent nearly a century, from the 1930s to a phoenix costume from last year's Krewe of Gambrinu

Morgan’s arrival in the mid-80s coincides with the latest revival of Mardi Gras, which at the time had been dormant since the mid-1950s. Festivities on the island had been held on and off since 1867, ebbing and flowing with the city’s fortunes, until energy executive and developer George P. Mitchell — a BOI, or born on the island — and his wife Cynthia helped get the parades rolling again in 1985. Since then, only the pandemic in 2021 has paused the revelry.

One costume in the exhibit, stationed in the museum’s lobby, is a spangly red, white and blue number once worn by a member of the Quaker City String Band, best-known for marching in Philadelphia’s Mummers Parade on New Year’s Day. Mitchell flew the band to Mardi Gras for more than a decade; according to Tucker, the costume is on loan from a volunteer who won it at an auction trying to raise money to bring the Mummers back to the island. Hope springs eternal.

There’s more than just gowns, too. Also on display will be a number of intricately decorated capes created by Galveston seamstress Jo Daily, who began by creating outfits for Treasure Ball, the annual Mardi Gras fundraiser for the island’s Catholic O’Connell High School. Impressed by her handiwork for her own kids’ capes, other islanders began commissioning their own to the point where Daily could have as many as eight going at once.

The Bryan’s yearly Mardi Gras exhibit is also a hit with locals. Galveston’s krewes, the social clubs which form the building blocks of Mardi Gras, have enthusiastically contributed know-how alongside old costumes and other paraphernalia. Last year’s, entitled “Pageantry and Revelry,” was “packed,” Tucker says.

“Most of our special exhibits that rotate through here are about Texas in general, or the American West in general,” adds Broussard. “It’s nice to be able to do something that's just about Galveston.”Your weekly guide to Houston arts & entertainment.
