It turns out that leaving the customer to do the work at the checkout has also given the customer a chance to play with the system. Did anyone in the boardroom that day wonder about any of this? They are certainly thinking about it now, and many stores are now investing in something called “loss prevention.”
Customers in regular stores have not consented to random checks and stores are not supposed to stop a customer without good reason — like they suspect that a theft has taken place.Consumers know that the price of food has surged well beyond the rate of inflation. People are angry at the Big Food retailers. This might motivate some to get even at the checkout.
