Place ground chuck, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper in a large bowl; mix using your hands to combine. Shape mixture evenly into 4 very thin patties.Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium high . Place patties on oiled grates; grill, uncovered until charred on bottoms, about 4 minutes.
Flip patties; cook until other side is well-charred and a thermometer inserted into thickest portion of meat registers 155°, 2 to 3 minutes.Remove patties from grill; top each with 1 cheese slice. Let stand until cheese melts, about 1 minute.While cheese melts, place buns on grill, cut-side down. Grill, uncovered, until buns are lightly toasted and grill marks appear, about 30 seconds. Remove from grill. Place patties on grilled buns; add your desired toppings .
