FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried pleaded not guilty Tuesday in a Manhattan federal courthouse to allegations he misappropriated billions of dollars on his cryptocurrency exchange and thereby engaged in one of the largest fraud schemes in U.S. history.
of FTX Trading Ltd. with Alameda Research LLC, another company he controlled to fund luxury real estate purchases and other personal expenses, as well as illegal federal campaign contributions, the indictment alleges. The Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission have separately filed similar civil fraud cases against Bankman-Fried.
Bankman-Fried agreed not to oppose extradition to the U.S. after being arrested in the Bahamas last month. On Tuesday, Kaplan added to his bail conditions by banning him from access to transferring cryptocurrency or the assets of FTX or Alameda Research after a prosecutor accused him of transferring some to foreign regulators in hopes that they would be more lenient toward him than U.S. authorities.
Bankman-Fried appeared before Kaplan after Judge Ronnie Abrams recused herself on grounds that her husband's law firm had represented FTX.
