From Toronto, he spoke against the war in Ukraine. Now this Russian composer can't go home. Prokhor Protasoff was sentenced to five years in prison last month for criticizing the Russian army’s conduct in Ukraine.

“Knowing that I can’t visit my family or see my home country again is unsettling. they would arrest me at the point of entry.”

The 34-year-old reposted and liked news content on that platform shared by international media outlets such as BBC and Deutsche Welle showing the latest footage from the war zone in Ukraine. “They sentenced me to prison for reposting news about the killings in Bucha and the Kremenchuk shopping mall attack. According to the court ruling, those videos were deemed ‘false information.’”

Chikov is the director of Agora International Human Rights Group in Russia, which oversaw Protasoff’s case in Kirov. A project by his group called “Network Freedoms” helps clients such as the Russian composer in absentia, voluntarily.
