“When I arrived here, I didn’t know any English. If they asked, ‘how are you?’ I would say, ‘yes.’ I answered everything with yes. I struggled talking to my teammates during my first year . It wasn’t easy. But I was here and not going anywhere so I had to keep trying. “Aki’s amazing,” the SMU senior point guard said. “If you see her, she always has a smile on her face and is always happy. She brings that positive energy to practice and in games. She really takes a little stress off everyone else. But she also has a great basketball IQ and is tremendous on defence.”
“She was a bit of an unknown when we got her,” Munro said. “I wasn’t exactly sure how good she was going to be. After her first year with us she really grew into her role. She’s now one of the top defenders in the league. She’s skilled and has a tremendous work ethic.” “And there’s a lot more trash talking. Everyone is always arguing. But I can’t do that,” she added with a laugh.“They’re always watching online,” she said of her parents, who each coach minor basketball in Japan. “Even if we have a game at 1 p.m., it’s 2 a.m. in Hyogo.
