Among Guy Kenimer's biggest achievements with the Florida Theatre was the Happy Hearts program, during which thousands of needy children came to the theater on Christmas Day.
He was born in mountainous Northeast Georgia and, after he was orphaned at age 6, he and his younger brother John were taken in by two unmarried aunts and the boys' grandfather, a former Confederate soldier.
A family history says the big house was often home to boarders, vacationers and gold miners. In addition, the boys"were well-tutored by their two aunts who made sure the house was always brimming with the latest in literary magazines, books, encyclopedias and enduring classics like Shakespeare and Homer."
Guy was drafted in 1917 at 23 and shipped to France with the 6th Infantry Division, where he fought in the trenches during the blood-soaked Battle of Argonne Forest during World War I. After college at Georgia Tech, he came to Jacksonville to manage the Florida Theatre, working his way up to be general manager of Paramount theaters in Florida.
