The generosity in the south was one of the biggest surprises. You highlight a number of people you met in the book. What was it like interacting with so many different walks of life? You detail this a lot in the book—you seemed to find a lot of objects and items on the side of the road from bullets and driver’s licenses to roadkill and liquor bottles. Why did these stand out so much to you?
Having some sort of an idea of your route is a great way to plan, but I also caution people not to spend too much time on it. Don’t become obsessed with it. Know where you’re going, but don’t stress yourself out to the point where you consider not doing it.
