John Christopher Columbus Hill known as Juna Cristobal Columbo Gil in Mexico, not only laid out Mexican rail lines and supervised mining operations across the country, but also became a holistic physician. It’s the day after Christmas, 1842. In the Mexican border town of Mier, downriver from Nuevo Laredo, a citizen soldier from Fayette County, stands before his captor, Mexican General Pedro de Ampudia.

Young Hill’s adventure began in September 1842, on the family farm near Fayetteville. He and his pals were standing around in the yard playing mumbly-peg, the old game that involves flipping a pocket knife into the ground, the winner being the one who can plant the knife closest to his bare feet without stabbing himself.

Just as the Hills were leaving, older brother James, unable to go because of ill health, handed John the muzzle-loading flintlock he had used at the Battle of San Jacinto. Never let it fall into the hands of the enemy, he told his little brother. A commanding officer assigned Hill to a niche atop the roof of a building where he could see the Mexican army’s cannon without being seen. Relying on shooting skills he’d honed back home, the boy picked off artillerymen each time they raised their heads. As he told the general, he killed at least a dozen men.
