Michael Indge, who sought approval for after-hours use of Chemainus Lake to harvest the invasive species for personal consumption, says he hasn’t yet eaten frogs’ legs but wants to try them

Michael Indge wrote North Cowichan council to seek approval for after-hours use of Chemainus Lake to harvest the invasive species for personal consumption.

Indge said while fishing recreationally at Chemainus Lake he’s noticed the bullfrogs, which are known to kill and eat native frogs. The province said in an email that it does not restrict people from harvesting bullfrogs, a non-native species that can be “captured or killed at anytime, anywhere.” It’s believed that people wanting to raise American bullfrogs for food were responsible for bringing them to B.C. in the first place. “They were farmed for their meaty legs,” the province of B.C. says in an invasive species information document.
