Learning to fix a flat tire is just one of the many skills students can learn at Freewheelin', a nonprofit that sells new and used bikes and offers community programming for kids.
Students take their seats around a U-shaped table. An old, pockmarked bike hangs from a stand in the middle of the table. The room smells of rubber tires and the ping of tools against metal echos off the walls.
“Who here knows how to fix a flat tire?” Dana Dobbins says to a class of eight students at Freewheelin’ Community Bikes, a bike shop on Indianapolis' north side.Learning to fix a flat tire is just one of the many skills students can learn at Freewheelin', a nonprofit that sells new and used bikes and offers community programming for kids.
In the Green Apron program, Dobbins and other instructors teach basic bicycle repair skills to students ages 10 to 18. Similar to martial arts belts, the shop uses different colored aprons to indicate skill level. Students can work their way through four levels to reach the black apron which is earned when they're a certified mechanic ready for employment.The shop's executive director, LaNisha Clark, hopes the entry-level program will introduce students to a new outlet that has the potential to become a career.
