Pierre Karl Péladeau is in a buoyant mood. His company, Videotron, just acquired Freedom Mobile and is now Canada’s fourth-largest wireless carrier.

Pierre Karl Péladeau has just come from a marketing meeting in the Toronto offices of his newly acquired wireless company, Freedom Mobile — and he’s in a buoyant mood.

Péladeau, 61, wearing a digital watch with a rubber wristband and black running shoes along with his tailored blue suit, laughs when asked if he’s planning anything similar to put his own stamp on the new business. The former leader of the separatist Parti Québecois stops mid-sentence and jokes that he’s not going to utter Pierre Trudeau’s famous “Just watch me” line, but adds, “We certainly look to have some surprising things coming.

“It’s not because of my blue eyes that I’m going to get market share. I’m going to get it because I’m offering a better product and a better price,” he says, adding that Freedom Mobile customers can also soon expect to see an end to dropped calls when travelling outside their home coverage area. Videotron only stepped in as the Freedom Mobile buyer last summer and the process dragged out over many more months through a trial at the Competition Tribunal and months of waiting for a final decision from Ottawa.
