Universal pre-k has been a non-starter for the GOP-led Legislature, but Republican speaker pushes to expand existing program.
The Pre-K program at Kids Kingdom graduated 35 students from the all-day Pre-K program on June 1. The graduation took place at West Conroe Baptist Church with more than 150 family and friends attending the ceremony. The school is certified through Texas School Ready.A measure to provide free pre-K for teachers was named by Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan as a priority for this year’s legislative session.
Phelan pledged “meaningful action” on policies “that better support our teachers — beginning with recruitment and ending with retirement.” If it is passed by both the House and the Texas Senate and signed by Gov. Abbott, children of public school teachers employed by school districts would be entitled to enroll in pre-K programs offered by that district.
