Arms dealer joins Kremlin-loyal Liberal Democratic Party - which wants Russia to reconquer ex-Soviet countries - just a few days after being exchanged for US basketball star Brittney Griner
Griner, 32, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and star of the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Phoenix Mercury, was arrested on 17 February at a Moscow airport after vape cartridges containing cannabis oil, which is banned in Russia, were found in her luggage.
Mr Carstens said things really felt real for Griner when he told her that “on behalf of the President of the United States, Joe Biden, and Secretary of State Tony Blinken, I’m here to take you home.” Mr Carstens said she asked others on the plane who they were. “She moved right past me and went to every member on that crew, looked them in the eyes, shook their hands and asked about them, got their names, making a personal connection with them,” Mr Carstens said. “It was really amazing.”
“I was left with the impression this is an intelligent, passionate, compassionate, humble, interesting person, a patriotic person,” Mr Carstens added. “But above all, authentic. I hate the fact that I had to meet her in this manner, but I actually felt blessed having had a chance to get to know her.”
