ICYMI: “It’s becoming clear that P.E.I. has a really really rich record of fossils from this time period. This is the only place in all of Canada where you can find a record of life on land from this time period (the Permian period),” said scientist ...
Matt Stimson, assistant curator of geology and paleontology at the New Brunswick Museum, works to recover a fossil recovered from a Cape Egmont beach last year. It took several hours in a race against the tides to remove the find from the shoreline. - ContributedCAPE EGMONT, P.E.I. – A fossil of “holy grail”-level rarity that was rescued from a P.E.I. beach in 2022 will soon be making its way to Ottawa’s Carleton University for study.
Losing the specimen would have been tragic because this fossil is truly something special. Potentially even something never seen before, said Stimson.Fossils are often recovered as pieces. Animals and plants tend to break up after death, either swept away by the elements or torn apart by predators and scavengers. So, it’s relatively rare for scientists to recover an intact fossil specimen. This is only the second ever found on P.E.I. There have only been a handful recovered in Atlantic Canada.
That is an exciting prospect not only for the scientists involved with its recovery but also for Lisa Cormier, the P.E.I. schoolteacher who discovered it while walking her dog. P.E.I. teacher Lisa Cormier was walking along the beach in Cape Egmont last summer when she found an animal fossil. She contacted provincial authorities, and a team of paleontologists rushed to the site to recover the specimen before it was destroyed by the tides. - ContributedNow that the specimen has been secured and packed, it will be sent to the care of Hillary Maddin, of the Earth Sciences team at Carleton University.
“There are others that lead on through the tree of life and evolution into other creatures – maybe even us . This could well be a new branch on the tree of life, or it may fill in a gap, a missing link if you like, on the tree of life. So, it’s really exciting,” said Calder.
