Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Timothy McCormick said he did not realize the damage Edward Kline had caused until he listened to the stories of nearly a dozen former members of the band program.

Last month, Kline pleaded guilty to 11 counts of gross sexual imposition and one count of sexual imposition. He faced as much as 16½ years in prison. The allegations date back to 2003, the year Kline began working at the school district. He served as the band director for the middle and high schools.
One by one, the former students walked to a lectern and told the judge how Kline groomed them. They said they were young at the time and wanted to do well in band and be recognized. One said Kline would pull her out of classes to hang awards or make copies for him in his office. As she did, he would grope her. Once she left, he tossed the copies away.
