They have all demanded the removal of their names from the university’s sports hall of fame as an act of solidarity.
Brown went straight to the National Football League’s Buffalo Bills out of SFU and eventually played with Washington before landing in Winnipeg, where he became a seven-time CFL all-star for the Blue Bombers and the league’s most outstanding Canadian in 2001. He said Wednesday he owes everything in his life to the jump-start he got from the SFU football program.
“My experiences at university, going to the NFL straight out of college, first time living away from home in Buffalo, starting NFL games, the players I got to play with, going to Winnipeg and meeting one of the most passionate fan bases in the Canadian Football League, spending my entire career there, meeting my wife there, having my child there. It’s everything. It’s the total experience and it is all grounded in football and the foundation I had as a student-athlete at SFU.
When he first heard that SFU had scrapped football, he wanted to respond. It has taken him a couple of weeks to decide on the best course of action, one that would support the current student-athletes and also draw attention to the alumni’s ongoing fight for reinstatement. So he made some calls to other notable former players and got the ball rolling.
“This isn’t the Simon Fraser University I went to. I’ve got a daughter who is going to be an athlete. She won’t be going to Simon Fraser University. I’ve got a nephew still in Vancouver. He just won athlete of the year at his school.
