The former director and owner of Dawson Funeral Home Ltd. in Crapaud has elected to have 36 of his 66 fraud charges heard in P.E.I. Supreme Court before a judge and jury.
Lowell Oakes, 70, did not appear in person on March 20 in provincial court in Charlottetown for the election. Instead, his lawyer Peter Ghiz appeared by telephone on Oakes' behalf.P.E.I. protesters say they lost thousands of dollars when Dawson Funeral Home closed
The 36 charges that are headed for P.E.I. Supreme Court allege fraud over $5,000. Those matters were adjourned by Judge Nancy Orr to April 11 in Supreme Court whereas the remaining 30 counts alleging fraud under $5,000 were adjourned to April 12 in provincial court. Oakes has yet to enter a plea on the 66 charges.
According to a July 22, 2022, P.E.I. RCMP press release, Oakes was charged with the 66 fraud counts in relation to alleged financial irregularities with pre-arranged funerals. The funeral home closed in August 2021. The Prince Edward Island Funeral Services and Professions Board revoked Oakes' funeral director and funeral home operator licences and fined him in relation to the allegations.
