The former Moorland Motel property in Whitbourne was sold in a public land auction on Feb. 13 due to taxes owed to the municipality. — Google Street View imageST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Moorland Motel in Whitbourne is the site of numerous memories for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians — whether it’s clear memories of staying there, buying ice cream or Mary Brown’s nearby, or more hazy ones watching live music on its moving stage, the motel conjures up the past for many who pass by.
The property was initially put up for public auction on Jan. 31 due to a $178,000 tax bill owed to the Town of Whitbourne, but it received no bids, according to staff at the town. A second auction took place on Feb. 13, and it was sold to Sharona for $86,000. Kelloway, who also owns a contracting company, said the building has good bones, and he sees a lot of potential in it.
“The floating stage, it would take you between the two floors, you would be playing in front of one group of people and then it’s a whole new group of faces, then halfway through the song you’re on the other floor again. It was kind of bizarre, really,” he said with a laugh. “It was always a good time though, always good gigs.”
